BISP To Be Formally Launched in Jan

PESHAWAR: Chairperson Benezir Income Support Program (BISP) Farzana Raja has said that Rs.34 billion BISP program would be formally launched in the first week of January as NADRA was verifying 50,000 application forms of the applicants on daily basis.

Talking to mediapersons at the residence of Senior Provincial Minister and PPP Provincial Head, Rahimdad Khan here on Friday, Farzana Raja said that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have started BISP program to support the deserving women and bring them in the main stream of development in line with the aim and desire of Shaheed PPP leader Benazir Bhutto.

Under the program Rs.1000 would be provided to one female of a deserving family, she said, adding that BISP was the third largest funded program in Pakistan, which has been verified by World Bank, IMF and other international organizations as a transport program.

She said that the offices of BISP has been set‑up in the Provinces, FATA, northern areas and AJK that would monitor and evaluate the program adding that Director Generals at the Provincial Level and at the Divisional level Directors would be the in‑charge of BISP.

Farzana Raja said that it was the first phase of the program and in the second phase MPAs would also be included in this program. She said that in the first phase 350,000 deserving families have been targeted in this program as due to lack of correct data of poor families we have to rely on the applications received from the people.

Regarding monitoring system, she said that National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) was verifying the authenticity of the applicants and the government has started data collection and national survey to determine the exact figures of the deserving families.

She said that BISP has exit strategies under which it would provide jobs and micro financing schemes to provide financial assistance to the deserving families.

In reply to a question, she said that the program was fully transparent and the distribution of the money would be made through postal service to ensure transparency.

Regarding the IDPs, she said that President Asif Ali Zardari directed to setup emergency relief camps at the calamity stricken areas of NWFP and Baluchistan.

She said that she was visiting these camps in a bid to share the feelings of the internally displaced persons, who were suffering numerous problems being far away from their homes and convey the message that the government was fully alive to their problems and was taking every possible effort to resolve them at the earliest.

She said that all the registered IDPs would be entitled to avail the BISP adding that 9000 families IDPs staying with their relatives and 6500 registered IDPs at various camps would benefit from this program.

Earlier, she visited the relief camp set up for the Bajaur and Mohmand IDPs at Risalpur to launch the Emergency Relief Camp under the aegis of BISP.
