Natasha Richardson actress dies aged 45

Natasha Richardson, the versatile actress known for her nuanced performances on stage, television, and film, has died. She had suffered a traumatic brain injury in a skiing accident in Canada on Monday, March 16, and was later transported to New York, where she passed away at age 45. In a statement, Richardson’s husband, Liam Neeson, and their family said, “Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

Over the course of a renowned 25-year career that spanned every medium and every conceivable genre, Richardson proved her range time and again. She could acquit herself admirably in even the lightest fare, such as 1998’s family film The Parent Trap or the 2002 romantic comedy Maid in Manhattan, but as a member of the legendary Redgrave acting dynasty, which stretched back for generations, she always felt most at home tackling profound human dramas from the likes of Chekhov, Ibsen, Williams, and O’Neill. “I’m comfortable…where the most emotionally painful stuff is,” she told EW in 1998. “That’s where I feel a connection.”

On March 16, Richardson — the British-born daughter of Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave and the late director Tony Richardson, niece of Lynn Redgrave, and older sister of Nip/Tuck star Joely Richardson — became the center of her own wrenching drama when she suffered a brain injury after a skiing accident at a resort in Canada. Her husband of nearly 15 years, Liam Neeson, left the set of Chloe, a drama he was filming in Toronto, to be with her. Over the next 24 hours, conflicting reports about Richardson’s condition spread across the Internet, sowing confusion, disbelief, and sadness.

According to several accounts, Richardson’s fall — which occurred on a beginners’ trail during a private lesson at the Mont Tremblant resort — did not appear serious at first. “She did not show any visible sign of injury,” the resort said in a statement to the Associated Press. After about an hour, however, Richardson began to complain of a headache and ended up at a hospital in Montreal. From there, she was flown by private jet to New York — where she lived with Neeson and their two sons, Micheal, 13, and Daniel, 12 — “so her family could say goodbye to her,” a source told EW.

As a member of one of Britain’s most famous acting clans, Richardson entered the profession with enormous expectations on her shoulders. Her father, who won an Oscar in 1964 for directing the film Tom Jones, was among his elder daughter’s first and fiercest critics, picking apart an early performance in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “He said, ‘Not good enough,’ ” Richardson recalled in a 1998 interview. “Then he sent me the play with all the things underlined that I ought to think about.”

In time, however, Richardson emerged from the shadows of her famous parents, who had divorced when she was 4. (Her father died of complications from AIDS in 1991, at age 63.) She distinguished herself with her tremendous versatility and beauty on the stage, on television, and on the big screen, with films like 1990’s The Handmaid’s Tale and 1991’s The Comfort of Strangers. Richardson recruited Neeson to costar with her in a 1993 Broadway production of Anna Christie. The two instantly clicked both professionally and romantically. “We started rehearsing,” Neeson said in a 1994 interview, “and it was like suddenly walking on air.”

Over the past decade, Richardson continued to pivot between work in theater — winning a Tony in 1998 for her work in Cabaret — and in movies. A lifelong gourmand, she appeared this past season as a guest judge on Top Chef. Though her relationship with her mother was strained at times by Redgrave’s political activism in earlier years, the two became quite close. They costarred in the 2007 film Evening and recently shared the stage in a one-night performance of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music.

MUMBAI: Ash, who is currently in New York for the premiere of Pink Panther 2, will return to India after a fortnight to resume filming for Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. Ash had two releases in 2008: Jodhaa Akbar and Sarkar Raj. Both the films did well at the box office and Ash’s performance was appreciated in both. Jodhaa Akbar released in February while Sarkar Raj released in June 2008.

Mani Ratnam’s Raavan which is set to release at the end of 2009 is most likely to be Ash’s next Hindi release after Sarkar Raj in June 2008. The film also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Vikram, Govinda and Manisha Koirala.

The film is a modern day re-telling of the Ramayana. Ash will play Sita, a contemporary accomplished Carnatic musician while Vikram is Rama and Abhishek is Raavan. Ash will be seen in colourful costumes in this film. The plot of the film revolves around Ash and Rajnikanth who is a couple. The twist in the story is that Rajnikanth invents a robot called Endhiran who also falls in love with Ash. The film will release in April 2010.

By the time the films release, Ash’s Indian fans would have waited for well over a year to see their favourite actress back on their Bollywood screen again.

No Need For Indian Cinema To Be Apologetic: Bachchan

Jaipur: Indian cinema, long a lightning rod for critics for its unrealistic storylines, should not be apologetic about what it does, says Amitabh Bachchan.

"We are very happy with the kind of films we make. They touch 1.2 billion people,” Bachchan, 66, said at a literary festival in Jaipur.

“And generally, our films do have some basic goodness: good always triumphs over evil, our films are of hope, and we basically make films that give you poetic justice in three hours."

Bachchan, arguably Bollywood’s biggest superstar, recently wrote on his blog (http://bigb.bigadda.com) that British director Danny Boyle’s "Slumdog Millionaire", which received 10 Oscar nominations, might not have been such a success if an Indian had directed it.

The blog post was widely quoted by newspapers and TV channels. On Friday, Bachchan said the post was misunderstood by sections of the media.

"This wonderful film has got 10 Oscar nominations including one for a sound engineer, and so I am very happy," he said. "Of course I hope A.R. Rahman wins and brings another Oscar home."

The actor, who made his debut in “Saat Hindustani” 40 years ago and has reigned over the Hindi film industry since, said he never believed he was specially gifted.

"I've never believed that I was special or had some special quality in me. All that I am today is because of my parents and because of my fans who supported me through all these years," Bachchan said.

The actor said he did not feel he was missing out on a normal life despite constant media scrutiny.

"I don't think I've lost anything by becoming an actor … anything that I want to do, I can still do. I still go for a walk every morning," he said at a discussion on Bollywood memorabilia.

Bachchan, whose wife, son and daughter-in-law are also actors, said he made a conscious decision to not give son Abhishek a leg up in an industry notorious for its dynasties.

"(Wife) Jaya and I never attempted to do anything special for Abhishek. We had the means and we could have produced a film for him or thrown a grand lunch for important people but we wanted to make sure he stood on his own feet," he said.

Responding to a question on whether he picked films that had a good message, Bachchan said most actors chose films based on the director, the script and the character.

"If the film also sends out a good message to society, then that's good," he said.

In a country that witnesses frequent outbreaks of communal tension, Bachchan said cinema played an important role, almost by default.

"When you sit in a darkened cinema hall, you never ask if the person sitting beside you is Hindu or Muslim; we laugh at the same jokes, sing the same songs," he said.

"I think, sadly, there's no better example of an integrated India than in the cinema hall."

Shilpa Sheds Tears of Joy on first visit to Taj post 26/11

Mumbai:Tears of joy filled Shilpa Shetty's eyes when she saw the waiter, who used to serve her often at Wasabi, the Japanese restaurant at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower hotel here, on her first visit after the terror strikes.

“I had tears of joy when I met Ronald, the Mangalorean waiter who's always served me, spoken to me in Tulu, my mother tongue, and always made me feel at home. I had a sigh of relief when I saw him,” Shilpa posted on her blog www.shilpashettylive.com/blog.

Shilpa says she was supposed to be at the hotel on Nov 26, when terrorists attacked the hotel. And entering the hotel after nearly two months brought back many feelings, “some not so good” for Shilpa.

“The hotel still looked a beauty, the only major change being the security that had been beefed up. Entering the hotel lobby brought back a whole lot of mixed feelings - nostalgic, some happy, some not… But by the end of dinner, it was all worth it. Nothing's changed, the menu, the quality, the service and above all the spirit and positivity.

“It was heart-warming to see the beaming faces of the hotel staff and the warmth they extended. This was my first step towards getting over the deep pain and fear that 26/11 left on me,” she wrote.

Though Shilpa was happy to see the usual hustle-bustle at the hotel, she says it will never be the same again.

“I will always be haunted by a lot of memories, but the irony is that some things will always be the same - Wasabi, my favourite restaurant and Mumbai, my favourite city.”

The dinner was a surprise planned for the actress by her friends and businessman beau Raj Kundra.

“If it didn't come as a surprise visit, maybe it would've taken me longer to make my first visit,” said Shilpa.

Shah Rukh is the nicest superstar I've ever met: Bipasha

Mumbai: If you thought that wrinkles would stop Shah Rukh Khan from sporting young ladies on his arms, then you are mistaken. The actor, who already has top B-town ladies like Kareena Kapoor fighting for his attention, is now drawing praises from dusky beauty Bipasha Basu.

Speaking to a news daily about her cameo with the superstar, she said, "It was like Mumtaz-meets-Sadhana. I loved it! I got a chance to work with Shah Rukh Khan, nothing else matters. Like millions, I had seen him on screen. Then I met him for a show and I was very impressed”.

The stunner further added, "I did 'Rab Ne...' in the hope of doing a full-length role with Shah Rukh and a film with Aditya Chopra. That one day of shooting with Shah Rukh was memorable. He's the nicest superstar I've ever met and irresistibly charming. This was my chance to dance."

Ghajini's Actress Not Shifting To Mumbai

MUMBAI: After Aamir Khan, the one factor that is appealing to the audience in the Murugadoss directed super success, Ghajini, is the fresh, petite and almost child like innocence of its lead actress, Asin. And there is no doubt that after Genelia D'Souza (who also hails from the south), its Asin who has won the hearts of the common cinegoer through a heart warming performance. Post Ghajini, Asin has another biggie up her sleeve in the form of London Dreams, which is being produced by Vipul Shah and stars Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. She is at present quite busy with the shoot, although she is thoroughly enjoying the success of Ghajini. As is known, Asin has recently bought an accommodation in Bombay. So, the obvious question that comes to mind is whether Asin is shifting to Mumbai? Well, the answer is no. It's true that Asin has bought a flat in Mumbai but that is only because she was uncomfortable living out of a suitcase. And since her shooting schedule required her to spend a lot of time in Mumbai, she thought its better to buy a flat, rather than live in a hotel or a make-shift arrangement. In fact Asin also reveals that she has an international project in the offing and is open to the fact that she will go anywhere where her work takes her. Thorough professional we must say! And that's the way to reach out to the top Asin!

Britney Treats Her kids To Shopping Spree

Los Angeles, Popstar Britney Spears, who recently celebrated her 27th birthday, took her sons Sean Preston, three, and Jayden James, two, on an extravagant shopping spree.

The ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ hitmaker took her children to New York's famous Schwarz toy store, where she bought them toys worth thousands of dollars, reports China Daily.

"Each of the boys had an employee to walk around with, and they each had a huge metal trolley cart to fill up. They picked out hundreds of dollars worth of Mack Trucks, cement mixers and RC cars,” an onlooker said.

Both the kids were joined by Britney, Grandfather Jamie and Grandmother Lynn, as they picked up trolleys and stacked them with their favorite toys.

"Sean really fell in love with a car transporter, which he had taken out of the box so he could hold it everywhere he went. Jayden was most excited about a little blue plane, and cried when someone tried to take it away,” the onlooker said.

"Jamie picked out a stuffed Incredible Hulk toy for Sean and was saying to him, ''Who's this, Sean? Who's this?'' “The onlooker added.

Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines Faces Defamation Charges

Washington, : Natalie Maines, the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, has been slapped with defamation lawsuit for statements she made at a rally in 2007 about the murders of three young boys.

Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of one of three 8-year old boys murdered in 1993, has filed a complaint on November 25, claiming that Maines wrongfully made a "false and reckless claim that [Hobbs] committed the murders of the three boys."

His stepson Steve Branch, along with Christopher Byers and Michael Moore, was found dead May 5, 1993, reports Fox News.

In the 2007 rally, "Not Ready to Make Nice" singer told the crowd that new DNA evidence from the crime scene implicated Steve's stepdad, Terry Hobbs, and that Hobbs'' behavior following the boys' deaths was suspect.

Mumbai Terror Fails to Deter These Damsels

MUMBAI: The common man in Mumbai may be reeling under the effects of 26/ 11, but foreign actresses set to work in various Bollywood projects seem to show no signs of fear. Filmmakers are all set to welcome a bevy of exotic beauties for different film assignments over the next few weeks.

To begin with, Miss Universe UK 2008 Lisa Lazarus has already hit the headlines on Wednesday when she defied the pervading mood of fear and arrived to shoot for the Salman Khan- starrer, Veer. And now, Mexican beauty Barbara Mori is geared up to "arrive as per schedule in the first week of January" to work in the Hrithik Roshanstarrer Kites, revealed the film's director Anurag Basu.

Hollywood hottie Carmen Electra hits Mumbai shores next. The sultry beauty will arrive in the city soon to shoot with Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor for the Sajid Nadiadwala- produced Kambakht Ishq . "The arrival of these foreign girls in Mumbai sends out a positive signal to the world. Leave alone Barbara's arrival, I was worried that the foreign extras based in Mumbai who work in our films would leave the city after the terror strikes. I am surprised that they haven't," Basu said.

On Electra's arrival, Kareena confirmed: "I'll be shooting for a music video with Carmen Electra and Akshay for Kambakht Ishq." "Since India and especially Mumbai is still struggling to bounce back, the arrival of these girls should work as a tonic because it proves that if they can come to work here, why can't we continue with our lives? It also quashes reports that our country is a dangerous place to visit," said filmmaker Anees Bazmee, whose last blockbuster Singh Is Kinng featured international rapper Snoop Dogg.

While on Lisa, the beauty queen reportedly agreed to touch down in Mumbai only after Veer producer Vijay Galani hired five bouncers to exclusively protect her. What's interesting is that Galani might end up spending almost Rs 2 lakh ( Rs 16,000- 18,000 per day) on these bouncers since Lisa is expected to stay in India for around 15 days to wrap up her portions in the Anil Sharma- directed film.

For those who came in late, Lisa is one of the heroines in Veer.

She plays a girl from the UK who falls in love with Salman's character when she comes to India with her father. The film also marks the debut of Zarine Khan, who has been creating waves for being a lookalike of Salman's girlfriend Katrina Kaif.

With Lisa's entry in Veer, Salman's fetish for foreign girls has only gained strength. Not long ago, it was reported that Bollywood's Pocket Hercules was promoting Channel V's hot new Brazilian import, veejay Bruna Abdalah.

Katrina is also half British. In the past, Sallu has romanced Pakistani actress Somy Ali. His affair with her made headlines in early nineties. In fact, Salman went out of his way to help Somy gain a foothold in Bollywood.

Then there is Katrina, of course, who first made it to the A- list thanks to Salman's home production flicks such as Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Partner.

Katrina is now among the highest- paid actresses in B- town, having struck multi- film deals with Studio 18 and UTV. Veer, Salman's self- scripted dream project, has been in the news for various reasons including the fact that the film was put on hold due to the economic recession shortly after it was announced. Now, it's making headlines due to an extensive plan to recreate London as the city looked around the year 1900.

"We are currently looking into everything to replicate the landscape, building and costumes that existed from 1890 to 1900 in London. This requires extensive research. We will shoot in London after constructing the sets there," said Anil Sharma, the film's director.

Meanwhile, designer Ana Singh is designing costumes for the film to give Salman a completely periodic makeover. "He will look like someone who used to walk on the streets in London in 1890," added Sharma.

Katrina Declared ‘Sexiest Asian Woman’ in Latest Poll

Mumbai, : Gorgeous actor Katrina Kaif has won yet another poll. An Asian weekly has named her the ‘Sexiest Woman in Asia’. This is the second poll that she has won in the past month, the last one being the ‘Sexiest Woman’ by FHM magazine. Then, she had left behind names like Angelina Jolie, Madonna and Scarlett Johansson to win the prize. This time she has nudged last year’s winner Bipasha Basu to the second place.

Among the top ten women, eight are Indian names. And another surprise in the list is that Mallika Shwerawat has been ranked above Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Bollywood bombshell Sherawat is in the 6th place, while the former beauty queen could manage a mere seventh position. Other sexy Indian ladies in the list are Kareena Kapoor (3rd), Priyanka Chopra (4th), Malaika Arora Khan and Miss India 2008 Simran Kaur.

Another interesting fact about Katrina was unearthed by a website which said that she graces every 10th computer as the ‘wallpaper’. She is also the most downloaded person by mobile users. In the recently concluded IIFA Awards, she was crowned the ‘Style Diva’.

So many polls and surveys to prove that she is quite a happening personality! Here’s wishing that Kat, being a professional actor, wins some acting awards, too.

Angelina Jolie Tops Actress Salary list

www.apakistannews.com

LOS ANGELES: Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie has proven again how handsomely it pays to combine gun-wielding action with serious roles, as she topped The Hollywood Reporter's list of highest-earning actresses on Friday.

But salaries are plummeting for top actresses and still lag the earnings of leading men, the trade paper said.

Jolie, 33, earned $15 million for the action movie "Wanted" this year and she could make $20 million to star in a possible sequel, it said.

Jolie played dramatic roles in 2007's "A Mighty Heart" and in this year's "Changeling." The mother of six and partner of actor Brad Pitt last month talked about eventually fading away from acting to spend more time with her family.

Oscar winner Julia Roberts, 41, claimed the No. 2 spot after a long absence from the screen, making more than $15 million for "Duplicity," which comes out next year.

Actors are also earning less, with the exception of Will Smith, star of blockbusters "Hancock" and "I Am Legend," who is riding high with up to $25 million per movie.

"Everyone else's prices have gone down," an unidentified talent agent told The Hollywood Reporter.

Reese Witherspoon, 32, who topped the female list last year after winning an Oscar for her role in the 2005 movie "Walk the Line," dropped to No. 3. She earned $14 million for appearing in the comedy hit "Four Christmases" that opened last week.

Cameron Diaz, Katherine Heigl, Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Aniston rounded out the list, with 39-year-old "Friends" star Aniston earning more than $8 million for the comedy "Marley & Me" opening on Christmas Day.

Big stars such as Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman -- both Oscar winners -- are no longer able to earn $10 million a movie.

Compare that with Pitt and Johnny Depp, who according to The Hollywood Reporter make between $15 million and $20 million per film.
