In 26/11 Metter Pakistan Must Assure Her Cooperation: Ban

In 26/11 Metter Pakistan Must Assure Her Cooperation: BanPakistan should conduct a “full investigation” into the Mumbai attacks and cooperate with India in bringing the perpetrators of the terrorist incident to justice, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Wednesday.

Addressing a news conference with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Moon said he had told the premier “that the Pakistani government should have a full investigation into this issue and fully cooperate with the Indian government”.

Moon was replying to a question on whether he was satisfied with Pakistan’s compliance of resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council after the Mumbai attacks.

The resolutions outlawed the Jamaat-ud-Dawah, a front for the Lashker-e-Taiba terror group, and placed four LeT leaders on a list of entities and individuals facing sanctions for terrorist links.

In his opening statement Moon called for resumption of the peace process between India and Pakistan, which was suspended by New Delhi in the wake of the Mumbai incident.

Noting the “complexities of regional relations particularly in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks”, Moon said he had stressed to Gilani and “other interlocutors the importance of maintaining rapprochement between India and Pakistan that has taken its own momentum in the last several years”.

“In the long run, this is a critical aspect of regional relations and one that can pave the way for a new era of cooperation, peaceful co-existence and socio-economic transformation in South Asia,” Ban said.

Replying to a question, Moon said cooperative and friendly relations between India and Pakistan would be beneficial for the two countries and “very desirable for peace and stability in this subcontinent”.

Though bilateral ties had been hit by the Mumbai attacks, India and Pakistan should resume the composite dialogue process. “This is what the UN and international community wants,” Moon said.

Moon commended Gilani’s recent statement that his government would enact a new law, if necessary, to punish Pakistanis who commit crimes outside the country’s boundaries. He said such a step would be “very helpful” in the fight against terrorism.

Gilani clarified that interior ministry chief Rehman Malik had informed him that Pakistan’s laws are adequate for dealing with crimes committed outside the country. Gilani said new laws could still be enacted if necessary.

“Our resolve and intention is that we will never ever allow Pakistani soil to be used for terrorist activities,” he added.

Gilani also sought to bring up the UN’s role in resolving the Kashmir issue.

Must Be Punished Mumbai Terrorists: Pervez Musharraf

PALO ALTO, California: Former President Pervez Musharraf has said that anyone involved in November’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai must be punished, but warned that “hysteria” over the deadly siege threatens stability in the subcontinent.

“If there is proof, there must be action,” Musharraf said during a speaking event at Stanford University. But he added, “Let us not get hyper about it and whip up hysteria in the country so that the process of peace gets totally disrupted.”

Musharraf, offered his thoughts on combating terrorism, the roots of Islamic extremism, the state of Indian-Pakistani relations and other issues at Stanford University, where he gave a speech and answered questions from students. The former military ruler is on his first speaking tour in the United States since he resigned as Pakistan’s president in August to avoid impeachment.

Musharraf said while it was important to bring extremist groups under control, it was even more important to resolve the dispute over the territory of Kashmir — an issue he says has inflamed tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors and given rise to militant groups.

Musharraf said that poverty, illiteracy and political alienation — as well as political disputes over Palestine, Kashmir and other territories — were among the root causes of terrorism, and those issues had to be addressed in order to rid the world of terrorists.

“We always talk of clearing the leaves and branches, but we never talk of the root,” Musharraf said.

He urged the U.S. and the international community to offer more financial and political support to help Pakistan combat terrorism and extremism in his country.

“The people of Pakistan are fed up with these suicide bombers and these extremists. They demand their elimination,” he said. “Pakistan’s success in fighting terrorism is vital for the whole world.”

Rice denies 48-Hour Deadline For Pakistan To Take Action

Geo.tv

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday that Pakistan must act quickly to arrest suspects linked to the deadly attacks in India to help ensure there are no follow-on assaults.

Interviewed on a foreign TV channel, Rice said she stressed during her visit to Pakistan last week how important it was for Islamabad to act quickly but denied there was a 48-hour deadline to take action.

"The important thing is that Pakistan act and that these people are brought to justice and that any information that they may have is put to use in making sure follow-on attacks don't happen," Rice said.

Rice echoed remarks from Pakistan's foreign office denying Islamabad had agreed to a 48-hour timetable to take action against Pakistanis accused of involvement in the Mumbai attacks.

The Washington Post reported that Pakistan had agreed to a deadline imposed by the United States and India to arrest three people and formulate a plan to take action against a militant group accused of involvement in the attacks.

"No. There's not a timetable involved here," the US top diplomat said.

"Obviously, this is counterterrorism work. It's hard work. And it's not as if these people are sitting on the surface," she said, adding that Pakistani leaders "understood their responsibilities and now we're waiting."

The 60-hour Mumbai siege by Islamic militants has badly affected relations between India and Pakistan, the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors who have fought three wars since independence from Britain.

India says all 10 gunmen involved in the assault came from Pakistan, and has handed Islamabad a list of 20 terror suspects, with demands for their arrest and extradition.

Suspicion over the recent Mumbai carnage, which left 172 dead, has fallen on the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, a group that has fought Indian rule in Kashmir and was blamed for a 2001 attack on the New Delhi parliament.

Before visiting Pakistan, Rice made a solidarity visit to India.
