Anti-globalization sentiments on rise
ISLAMABAD: A global survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan has indicated a notable increase in resentment against globalization by people considering it against the interest of their family.

The survey revealed that
thirty two percent (32%) respondents across 23 countries believe that globalization, defined as increased international trade between countries and say that globalization is against the interest of their families, said a press release issued here Tuesday.

However, seventy two percent (72%) favour strong protectionist measures to protect jobs and local industries. Sixty two percent (62%) favour protectionist measures.

The poll, conducted between July and September 2008, reflects growing anxiety and discontent over the impact of the ailing global economy.

Respondents were asked about overall effect of globalization and they were supposed to answer through selecting the options of positive, somewhat positive, somewhat negative or very negative.

The sample size of the survey was approximately 1700 men and women from rural and urban areas comprising a cross-section of all ages, socio-economic and linguistic groups. The survey was carried out on 27-28 July 2008.

The survey was conducted by Gallup Pakistan and released by Gailani Foundation, affiliates of Gallup International Association.
