LAHORE: Pakistan cricket team's former captain and legendary all-rounder Wasim Akram has said that cricketer's demand to appoint a former cricketer and administrator as the PCB chairman had been fulfilled and it would help to promote cricket.

Talking here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday, Wasim said that the newly-appointed Chairman Ijaz Butt was a good choice as apart from a Test cricketer, he is an experienced administrator and hopefully would be able to run the PCB affairs wisely to put the Pakistan cricket back on track but he maintained that their demand to make a committee comprising senior former Test cricketers to run the Board's cricketing affairs was still there.

"I understand that technocrats should be employed to run the non-cricketing affairs of the Board but the international and domestic cricket affairs must be run by a committee of former cricketers and amendments in the PCB constitution should also be made," he added. He continued that the Board should be given at least two years to work before criticizing their performance.

Commenting on Yousuf's contract with the ICL, Wasim said that Yousuf has been a great batsman but his decision seemed a bit surprising as it would not go a long way to support his future in the international cricket.

"I would have preferred playing for my country instead of joining the ICL," he remarked. He maintained that the cricket premier body ICC seemed to have lost its powers and grip on the member countries and one could see series like ICL or billionaire Twenty20 were going on in the world.

"I think the ICC should gain power and control the matters while they should play there role to resolve the issue of IPL and ICL," former all-rounder opined.

Talking about the captaincy of national cricket team, Wasim said that Shoaib Malik seemed to have learnt and became a better captain with experience.

He said, "Some people have been talking about his removal from the slot but I think the Board should support him and give some more time to become a strong captain".

To a question about picking senior people to run the PCB, Wasim said that chairman IJaz Butt has picked some experienced players and management so far which is encouraging.

"The selection of Intikhab Alam as national team coach with Aaquib Javed to assist him was a good choice and it would help to improve the team's performance," Wasim said.
