WASHINGTON: Sonal Shah, a Gujarati NRI has been picked up by Obama to be in his transition team. Obama is picking up his advisors for smooth transition to the White House.
Sonal Shah is well known in the Indian-American community for her involvement with the non-profit Indicorps that she founded. She was earlier with Goldman Sachs, and is presently with Google.org, the philanthropic arm of internet behemoth Google.
Now, Shah, who has been earlier also been with the liberal think-tank Center for American Progress, has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the Obama-Biden Transition team.
Obama who trounced John McCain in the presidential election is trying to build a team that does not look a copycat of Bill Clinton administration.
He is doing a balancing act by roping in experienced Democrat hands as well as new blood that resonate with the slogan of change that he carried through out his campaign.
Sonal Shah, 40, an economist who co-founded Indicorps, is part of a panel comprising individuals with significant private and public sector experience who will offer their expertise in their respective fields to Obamas transition team.
Sonal Shah was born in Mumbai and went to the US with her father Ramesh Shah in 1970.
Shah’s experience as a senior adviser to the under secretary and assistant secretary at the Treasury Department during the Asian financial crisis makes her an asset on the Obama’s team as the President-elect grapples with the economic crisis gripping the US.
A day after Obama was elected, the US markets plummeted more than 500 points. Fixing the economy will be Obama’s top priority. At the Treasury Department, Shah also worked on various economic issues and regions of the world, and served as the director of African nations, covering sub-Saharan Africa.
