CPI(M) Demands Cut in Petroleum Prices

Ranchi: The CPI (M) politburo member, Brinda Karat, on Sunday accused the Centre of adopting double standards by cutting down excise duty on turbine fuel but ignoring rollback of petroleum prices.
"The Centre in June had raised petrol price by five rupees, and cooking gas by fifty rupees when the crude oil was 170 dollars per barrel," she said in a press conference here.
"Now the price per barrel has dropped to just 60 dollars. Instead of giving relief to the common man, the Centre is giving relief to Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airlines," Karat said.
She alleged that "the trinity" of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Planning Commission Vice Chairman Montek Singh Ahluhwalia were only addressing the demands raised by industry captains.
Asking them to take a lesson from the recent poll result of America, the Left leader said the Congress-led UPA would face the people's wrath during the upcoming elections for their "pro-capitalist" steps.
Barack Obama's victory, she added, was a clear mandate against the economic policies of outgoing President George Bush, which were responsible for the economic downturn.
"The people of India will also give a befitting reply to the UPA government's policies," Karat asserted.
