ANC Dissidents Name Breakaway party

Johannesburg: South Africa's ruling party dissidents will on Monday register the name of their new movement with the electoral commission, a breakaway chief told national radio.

The new party would be called the South African Democratic Congress (SADC), said Mbazima Shilowa, former Premier of South Africa's richest province Gauteng.

A resolution to form a new party to contest the year's election was taken during a national convention in Johannesburg over the weekend.

The idea to form a rival party was spearheaded by former members of the African National Congress, who resigned from the ruling party after a fall out with its leadership following the ouster of former President Thabo Mbeki in September.

"We are not doing this for or with Thabo Mbeki. He is not involved in the formation, he is not one of us," Shilowa told the radio SA FM.
