Mass. lottery OKs $300,000 to defend treasurer

BOSTON (AP) -- The Massachusetts State Lottery Commission has agreed to pay up to $300,000 to defend Treasurer Tim Cahill and the lottery executive director in a bingo software company lawsuit.

The commission voted Thursday to pay outside legal contracts for Cahill and Mark Cavanagh.

Rhode Island-based Bingo Innovative Software filed a $20 million federal lawsuit against the treasurer in December, saying its bingo product for a new daily race game was superior to that of Scientific Games, but Scientific Games was chosen because company executives donated campaign funds to Cahill.

Scott Harshbarger, Cahill's attorney, says the unique nature of the federal case merits outside counsel and authorizing up to $300,000 will avoid having to go back to the commission every time money is needed.

Texas Infant Is First US Swine Flu Death

A 23 month-old child in Texas was the first person to die from the Swine Flu in the US.
This was the first reported swine flu death outside of Mexico.
H1N1 Swine Flu Google Map- Wednesday, April 29, 2009:
The media is not disclosing much information on the child's identity. The CDC released no other information about how, or where, the child may have contracted the disease.
The AP reported:

The first U.S. death from swine flu has been confirmed — a 23-month-old child in Texas — amid increasing global anxiety over a health menace that authorities around the world are struggling to contain.

The flu death was confirmed Wednesday by Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In an interview with CNN, he gave no other details about the child.

Germany, which confirmed three cases Wednesday, is the latest country affected.

The world has no vaccine to prevent infection but U.S. health officials aim to have a key ingredient for one ready in early May, the big step that vaccine manufacturers are awaiting. But even if the World Health Organization ordered up emergency vaccine supplies — and that decision hasn't been made yet — it would take at least two more months to produce the initial shots needed for human safety testing.

The U.S. swine flu caseload rose to 65 in six states on Tuesday.

Ruchim jack-of-all-trades for Pats

BASEBALL-- Kyle Ruchim's world is pretty good right about now.

The Stevenson High School shortstop/pitcher fired a four-hit shutout in Friday's 6-0 win over St. Patrick.

For an encore, he delivered the game-winning double and was the winning pitcher in Monday's 2-1, nine-inning thriller over visiting Warren. Ruchim stepped to the plate after Corey Lasky (walk) and Bill Dorn (hit by pitch) reached base.

"It was a 2-and-1 count, so I knew I would get something good to hit," Ruchim offered.

He didn't miss the fastball, blasting a liner to the gap in right-center field to chase home Lasky and complete a 3-for-5 day. Ruchim also hurled two scoreless innings in relief (no hits, 3 strikeouts).

Amazingly, he had to share the spotlight Monday with sophomore pitcher Jeremy Scheck. In his first varsity start after a call-up from the sophomore team, the lefty allowed a run on four hits over seven innings. Scheck struck out 11 and walked three.

"I knew he was the best pitcher on the sophomore team," said Patriots coach Paul Mazzuca, whose club is 15-2 (3-1). "I had no idea if he'd last one inning because I'd never seen him pitch before."

Ruchim had some inside knowledge on Scheck, however.

"I trained with him over the summer," Ruchim said. "I absolutely knew he was capable of doing that."

Ruchim (3-0) displayed his pitching prowess against the Shamrocks, striking out seven and getting a slew of ground-ball outs.

"Kyle was getting his breaking ball over," Mazzuca said. "He got a lot of ground balls, and we were done in an hour-and-a-half."

Hitters in the 6-0 triumph included Ted Heiser (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and Pat Wilson (2 hits, 2 RBIs).

PITCHING RICH: Scott Firth will not finish the year undefeated. But the star right-hander had everything working in a 2-1 loss to Libertyville April 22.

Check out Firth's line: two runs (1 earned), four hits, 11 strikeouts, no walks. For the year, the Clemson University-bound Firth is 3-1 with a 0.47 ERA. In 30 innings of work, he's allowed 12 hits and seven walks with a gaudy 44 strikeouts.

Wildcats right-hander Troy Barton (3-3) won the duel, allowing a run while striking out nine.

The Patriots bounced back with a 9-3 win over Grant on Thursday. Brad Sorkin (4-0) worked six innings, allowing six hits while fanning nine hitters. Offensive leaders were Ruchim (2-for-3, solo homer) and Matt Geissler (3-for-3, 3 doubles, 3 RBIs).

Matt Robin (4-0) took a star turn Saturday against Rolling Meadows. In a 4-3 victory, the lefty struck out 14 while allowing five hits and four walks.

"I didn't know he had 14 strikeouts," Mazzuca said. "He didn't have his best stuff."

The game was deadlocked 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Dorn executed a suicide-squeeze bunt to bring home the winning run. Dorn was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

RIVALRY GAME: The Patriots will host Buffalo Grove on Saturday (11 a.m.) in a battle of neighborhood rivals.

Pakistan Vs Australia UAE Series Schedule

Some good news for cricket fans, Pakistan will play australia in UAE. The team will play 5 ODIs and 1 20-20 . The matches will be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. A full Report is released in this regard by Cricinfo.

Australia will play five ODIs and a Twenty20 against Pakistan in the UAE between April 22 and May 7. The first two ODIs will be played in Dubai and the rest in Abu Dhabi, with the teams returning to Dubai for the Twenty20 game, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Friday.

The Australians, currently in South Africa, will fly directly Dubai after the fifth ODI of the tour, in Johannesburg on April 17, Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman said.

Australia had cancelled their tour of Pakistan in the wake of the heightened violence in March 2008, and were expected to visit the country separately for the ODI and Test series this year. Venues in England, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai had been considered as alternatives in a discussion with Cricket Australia officials on the sidelines of an ICC executive board meeting late last month.

The PCB had turned down the offer to stage the matches at a neutral venue when CA initially expressed their reluctance to tour last year. Butt had said there was a possibility of hosting the Test series against Australia at neutral venues as well. “If Australia do not play the Tests in Pakistan there is a possibility of playing the Test series in England,” he said.

Australia have not played in Pakistan since 1998. In 2002, due to security concerns, a three Test series between the two sides in Pakistan was shifted to Colombo and Sharjah.

Schedule:
April 22: First ODI at Dubai

The actress has now teamed up with top stylists in the city for two films, Gnabagangal with Pa Vijay and Sarithiram with Mirugam Samy. The music of Gnabagangal was launched recently.

Looks like divas like Nayanthara, Trisha and Thamannah have a tough competition ahead. Meanwhile we wish the fans like Sridevika in her new avatar. – Sampurn Media, www.bollywood91.com

Ganguly Not to Be Kolkata Knight Riders’ Captain

http://www.bollywood91.com
Cape Town: It seems that Kolkata Knight Riders coach John Buchanan had his own way in the scheme of things as reports in a news channel claim that Sourav Ganguly has been slashed off the captaincy of the IPL team and the responsibility has been shouldered to Brendon McCullum instead.
WATCH IVE CRICKET MATCHES
Reports claim that the changes will be only for the first match of KRR, that is, on 19th April against Deccan Chargers.

A lot of controversy had been created earlier regarding John Buchanan’s ‘multiple-captains theory’ wherein he proposed to have different captains for the different aspects of the game, i.e. - batting, bowling, fielding and the toss as well.

The concept seemed more of conspiracy to remove Ganguly from the captaincy of KKR than to bring about some changes for the betterment of the team.

However, later, team owner Shah Rukh Khan dismissed the possibility of having multiple captains and said that “Dada will always remain our (KKR’s) main man”.

The reports have indeed come as a major jolt for Ganguly, but for McCullum, it must be a chance of a lifetime.

McCullum has had a spectacular IPL first season. He hit a belligerent 73-ball-158 against Team Bangalore in the IPL opener last season, and became the first player to score a century in the league

Dhoni and Harbajan Singh Skip Padma Shri For Ad-Shoots

www.bollywood91.com
New Delhi: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who were to be awarded the Padma Shri award this year, could not attend the award-giving ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Tuesday. Both the players were busy with endorsements and ad-shoots and that is the reason which kept the two ace cricketers away from the Presidential honour.

When contacted, Harbhajan Singh brushed the issue aside, saying that he had family commitments to take care of.

“There were a few family commitments, some serious things… That is why I could not go. We had a long tour of New Zealand and got just a few days with our families. People who are criticising me should understand that family issues cannot be ignored,” he said.

Dhoni, meanwhile, flew to South Africa on Tuesday itself and was unavailable for any comment.

Natasha Richardson actress dies aged 45

Natasha Richardson, the versatile actress known for her nuanced performances on stage, television, and film, has died. She had suffered a traumatic brain injury in a skiing accident in Canada on Monday, March 16, and was later transported to New York, where she passed away at age 45. In a statement, Richardson’s husband, Liam Neeson, and their family said, “Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

Over the course of a renowned 25-year career that spanned every medium and every conceivable genre, Richardson proved her range time and again. She could acquit herself admirably in even the lightest fare, such as 1998’s family film The Parent Trap or the 2002 romantic comedy Maid in Manhattan, but as a member of the legendary Redgrave acting dynasty, which stretched back for generations, she always felt most at home tackling profound human dramas from the likes of Chekhov, Ibsen, Williams, and O’Neill. “I’m comfortable…where the most emotionally painful stuff is,” she told EW in 1998. “That’s where I feel a connection.”

On March 16, Richardson — the British-born daughter of Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave and the late director Tony Richardson, niece of Lynn Redgrave, and older sister of Nip/Tuck star Joely Richardson — became the center of her own wrenching drama when she suffered a brain injury after a skiing accident at a resort in Canada. Her husband of nearly 15 years, Liam Neeson, left the set of Chloe, a drama he was filming in Toronto, to be with her. Over the next 24 hours, conflicting reports about Richardson’s condition spread across the Internet, sowing confusion, disbelief, and sadness.

According to several accounts, Richardson’s fall — which occurred on a beginners’ trail during a private lesson at the Mont Tremblant resort — did not appear serious at first. “She did not show any visible sign of injury,” the resort said in a statement to the Associated Press. After about an hour, however, Richardson began to complain of a headache and ended up at a hospital in Montreal. From there, she was flown by private jet to New York — where she lived with Neeson and their two sons, Micheal, 13, and Daniel, 12 — “so her family could say goodbye to her,” a source told EW.

As a member of one of Britain’s most famous acting clans, Richardson entered the profession with enormous expectations on her shoulders. Her father, who won an Oscar in 1964 for directing the film Tom Jones, was among his elder daughter’s first and fiercest critics, picking apart an early performance in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “He said, ‘Not good enough,’ ” Richardson recalled in a 1998 interview. “Then he sent me the play with all the things underlined that I ought to think about.”

In time, however, Richardson emerged from the shadows of her famous parents, who had divorced when she was 4. (Her father died of complications from AIDS in 1991, at age 63.) She distinguished herself with her tremendous versatility and beauty on the stage, on television, and on the big screen, with films like 1990’s The Handmaid’s Tale and 1991’s The Comfort of Strangers. Richardson recruited Neeson to costar with her in a 1993 Broadway production of Anna Christie. The two instantly clicked both professionally and romantically. “We started rehearsing,” Neeson said in a 1994 interview, “and it was like suddenly walking on air.”

Over the past decade, Richardson continued to pivot between work in theater — winning a Tony in 1998 for her work in Cabaret — and in movies. A lifelong gourmand, she appeared this past season as a guest judge on Top Chef. Though her relationship with her mother was strained at times by Redgrave’s political activism in earlier years, the two became quite close. They costarred in the 2007 film Evening and recently shared the stage in a one-night performance of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music.

Sonia Gandhi Recieved Threat from LTTE

New Delhi: Sri Lanka’s banned rebels, the LTTE might target several Indian VVIPs, including Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Sources said on Wednesday that the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an advisory to state DGPs, especially of the southern states, to be extra cautious about the security cover provided to VVIPs, especially Sonia Gandhi, during their campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls.

It is noteworthy that Sonia Gandhi’s husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a suicide attack carried out by the LTTE, with the help of a woman suicide bomber.

The LTTE, fighting for a separate Tamil land in Sri Lanka, have nearly been eliminated by the island country’s armed forces. The rebels have been restricted to a very small area, the No Fire Zone in Pudukudiyirippu area of Mullaittivu.

There are concerns that several LTTE rebels, including its top leadership, might infiltrate into India, if it hasn’t so far.

The Centre has already issued an advisory to the police chiefs to review the security of 11 Chief Ministers of different states, who are facing threat from terrorists and Naxals.

The 10 CMs include Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Raman Singh (Chhattisgarh), Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee (West Bengal), Mayawati (Uttar Pradesh), Naveen Patnaik (Orissa), Ashok Chavan (Maharashtra), Narendra Singh Modi (Gujarat) and Omar Abdullah (Jammu and Kashmir), official sources said.

Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal, Manipur’s Okram Ibobi Singh and K Karnunanidhi, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, are also in the list.

The advisories have been issued at a time when there are reports that extremist Taliban elements might have infiltrated into India through the Kashmir Vally. The Army has denied such reports.

However, not taking any chances the MHA today sought a report from security agencies about the reports of a possible Taliban infiltration.

The move comes after a wireless intercept reportedly suggested that a group of nearly 20 militants, said to be Taliban, were fighting the Army in Gurez sector of North Kashmir.

The Army headquarters informed the government that intermittent gunfight was on in the sector and two of the group had been gunned down, sources in the Home Ministry said. The sources said the bodies retrieved from the scene of encounter showed some features similar to those belonging to North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

The security agencies were closely monitoring the situation after an intercept between two groups suggested presence of Taliban in North Kashmir and panic messages from Lashker-e-Taiba cadres asking them to go back.
